Cornwall to have five Thursday night counts

Good news from Kevin Lavery. In his role as Returning Officer for Cornwall, Mr Lavery has decided that five of the six General Election counts will take place on the Thursday night. The exception will be St Ives where the logistics of getting ballot boxes from the off islands of the Scillies mean that the count will take place on Friday.

There has been a lot of discussion on blogs about when counts will take place with a big movement in favour of overnight counts. The Electoral Commission stepped in and warned returning officers that they faced prosecution for breach of official duty if they did not count overnight without good reason.

I'm very glad that, at least in Cornwall, we will have Thursday counting.
