Causley Festival tomorrow in Launceston

Tomorrow sees the first ever Charles Causley Festival in Launceston.

The Festival is named in honour of Charles Causley, Launceston's most famous son and one of the UK's finest poets. There will be a range of events throughout the day including book signings and readings, a poetry walk, art exhibition and cream tea.

The event is a pilot project for what will hopefully become an annual event. It's not meant to be solely about poetry or about Charles Causley - although both will always be key to the festival. The event is for all ages and backgrounds and as many events as possible will feature local writers and artists.

I very much hope that this will be a success and would invite all local residents to give it a go and attend at least one event. Congratulations to Town Clerk Rita Skinner and her team for getting it off the ground and many thanks to everyone who is taking part.

I've supported the festival through two grants using my Cornwall Council community grants pot.

You can find out more about the Festival, get a full programme of events and fidn out more about Charles Causley himself here.

How to waste money

At a time when the recession is biting and spending on vital front line services is being cut, how can this be justified?

The Arts Council is to give half a million pounds to a Devon artist to chop off part of an arctic island and tow it round the South West coast on a barge as part of the Cultural Olympiad in 2012.

The Cultural Olympiad is a great way to boost tourism and interest in the arts for those parts of the country which are not otherwise directly benefitting from the Olympics. But this seems like an incredible waste of money that won't bring any of the benefits we need.

At the same time, Cornwall is bidding to host the massive - Europe wide - Manifesta event to bring millions of pounds and hundreds of thousands of tourists to the county. I can imagine the Arts Council refusing to back Cornwall's bid because of lack of cash - cash that has been spent on this silly project.
