Launceston Foodbank opens for business

This morning saw the opening of the Launceston Foodbank and their premises on Newport Industrial Estate. The operation was formally opened by Mayor Rob Tremain and Sasha Gillard-Loft, Adam Paynter and myself were there to handover a cheque for £1300 which is a contribution to the Foodbank from our community chest.

It's sad that Launceston needs a foodbank and that there are people in our community who are struggling so much financially that they need the foodbank to enable them and their families to put food on the table.

But it is to the huge credit of the team of volunteers led by Keith Roberts that the organisation has got up and running so quickly. They have been supported by the churches and by grants and donations from individuals as well as Cornwall Council and the Town Council. They have got premises at a cheap rent thanks to the generosity of Andy Hardy and Premier Carpets and they have been helped out by Terry Graves and others to make it ready to use.

Already the Foodbank has got more than a ton and a half of food via a collection at Tesco and the support of Premier Foods. But once they are in full swing this could last as little as a month.

The Foodbank will hold collections on a regular basis and almost every type of tinned or dried food is wanted (but it must be in date!). Unfortunately, they can't accept fresh or frozen goods.
